Une étoile géante, des panneaux indiquant chaque thème présenté, des écrans explicatifs affichant de nombreuses photos et des automobiles de la marque, pas de doute, le Grand Palais était devenu l’espace d’une journée un territoire Mercedes.
Côté modèles de compétition, des F1 aux engins du fameux championnat allemand de voiture de tourisme (DTM) en passant par une AMG GTS «safety car F1», on pouvait découvrir les modèles pilotés par les plus prestigieux champions, à commencer par Fangio, qui ont fait briller la marque.
Rupture et retour à des temps plus actuels et leurs inévitables SUV , avec pour nouvel étendard le petit GLC récemment présenté. Mais le spectacle était surtout assuré par les très classiques Classe G avec une édition spéciale aux coloris très pétillants pour ce véhicule un brin austère (orange, vert fluo, jaune…..). Les amateurs de transmissions intégrales se sont réjouis à la découverte d’un G 500 «4×4²» d’une hauteur démesurée et d’un impressionnant G 63 AMG 6×6 à 6 roues motrices.
Mercedes a profité de l’occasion pour donner un avant-goût de sa gamme actuelle. Parmi ces nouveaux modèles, la Classe E cabriolet nous est apparue toujours aussi élégante, la petite SLC 300 charmante, et la longue berline CLS pleine de distinction. Parmi ces nouveautés, on redécouvre enfin avec plaisir la version cabriolet de la Classe S, qui est réinscrite au catalogue de la marque après 45 ans d’absence.
Les concepts IAA et Vision Tokyo ont à nouveau attisé la curiosité. Aux côtés de ceux-ci, la Smart Forjeremy jouait, si on peut dire, la star. Son intérieur extravagant, son volant difforme et des feux arrière surdimensionnés donnait l’impression que cette micro-citadine avait des ailes.
Après ce bond dans le futur, retour aux modèles historiques, qui semblaient aussi neufs qu’à leur sortie de l’usine. Nous avons effectué un véritable voyage dans le temps avec l’incroyable C 111 (1969) à la plastique sculpturale, deux légendaires 300 SL à portes papillon (1954) et une majestueuse 500K Luxusroadster des années 1930. Même le tricycle Benz, considéré comme la première véritable voiture au monde (elle a été lancée sur la route le 3 juillet 1886), était présent. Il ne fallait pas non plus manquer l’incroyable Renntransporter qui a véhiculé la F1 de Fangio.
Nous nous sommes enfin attardés sur les modèles siglés AMG préparés pour la performance et le sport. Un espace était dédié aux SLS AMG, telles une Electric Drive fonctionnant à l’électricité, une AMG roadster et une AMG Black Series. Un second groupe, plus impressionnant encore, comprenait une McLaren SLR coupé, une rarissime SLR Stirling Moss (ci-dessous) et notre favorite, une spectaculaire CLK LM de FIA GT1 développant 600 chevaux.
