On imagine aisément que le cahier des charges de la sixième génération de la M5 n’avait rien d’une formalité. Une nouvelle fois, la division sportive Motorsport de BMW a dû faire une entorse à sa doxa. Depuis sa création, la cellule chargée de développer les modèles les plus sportifs du constructeur munichois s’est posée en défenseur du moteur atmosphérique et de la propulsion. Jusqu’ici, les ingénieurs avaient réussi à préserver leur doctrine. La précédente M5 a été le premier modèle à rompre le contrat, s’abritant derrière le respect de l’environnement et le durcissement des normes de dépollution pour céder aux sirènes de la suralimentation. La version de 2012 abandonnait donc le sensationnel V10 5 litres, dérivé de la Formule 1, au profit d’un V8 4,4 litres à injection directe d’essence dopé par une paire de turbos à double étage.
C »est ce bloc dans une version revisitée et améliorée que l’on retrouve sous le capot de la dernière M5. Comme le modèle 30ème anniversaire de 2014, la M5 commercialisée au printemps 2018 annonce une puissance de 600 chevaux de 5 600 à 6 700 tr/min. Grâce au recours à de nouveaux turbocompresseurs et à une optimisation de l’injection, le couple gagne 50 Nm, délivrant 750 Nm, sur une large plage de régimes, de 1 800 à 5 600 tr/min. Ces progrès s’avèrent pourtant insuffisants pour reprendre l’avantage sur la récente Mercedes E 63 S AMG. La berline sportive de la firme à l’étoile avoue 612 chevaux et un couple gargantuesque de 850 Nm. Dans les deux cas, effectuer un déplacement tourne à la formalité. Comme chez Mercedes, BMW a finalement jugé qu’il était plus prudent d’équiper son nouveau pur-sang d’une transmission intégrale. Une mini-révolution dans le monde des ingénieurs M. Que les conducteurs les plus sportifs se rassurent: la M5 préserve une diversité de programmes en combinant les modes du DSC et ceux du M xDrive. Il est ainsi possible d’enlever progressivement les assistances électroniques jusqu’aux modes extrêmes permettant de drifter. DSC déconnecté, la M5 a prévu trois modes M xDrive pour le pilotage sur circuit. Au dernier niveau, seules les roues arrière sont motrices.
Pour transmettre la puissance, la nouvelle M5 pourra compter sur une transmission M Steptronic à huit rapports, fonctionnant aussi bien en automatique ou à partir des palettes au volant. BMW annonce des performances dignes des meilleurs coupés du marché: le 0 à 100 km/h en 3,4 secondes (un gain de 0,5 s par rapport au modèle anniversaire de 2014) et les 200 km/h atteints en 11,1 secondes.
L’expérience acquise dans les matériaux légers et plus particulièrement la fibre de carbone renforcée de plastique (CFRP) est une nouvelle fois mise à profit pour la confection du toit de cette sixième M5. En attendant de connaître son gain véritable, on sait au moins que ce matériau assure à la nouvelle M5 un poids inférieur à celui de sa devancière et un centre de gravité abaissé. En option, le freinage en carbone-céramique entraînera un gain de 23 kilos.
Si le châssis surbaissé et les suspensions ont bénéficié d’un traitement spécifique pour faire passer la puissance, les designers ont réussi à préserver l’élégance naturelle de la Série 5. La M5 n’est pas défigurée par l’adoption de boucliers très travaillés et d’un capot-moteur en aluminium largement nervuré. Côté high-tech, la M5 adopte les derniers raffinements proposés par la Série 5 commercialisée depuis le début de l’année 2017.
Quant à l’habitacle, s’il reprend l’esprit de la Série 5, il se conforme aux standards d’un modèle Motorsport, adoptant des sièges plus enveloppants en cuir, une finition plus exclusive et, pour la première fois, le bouton-poussoir de démarrage et les petites palettes des programmes M en rouge.
Les premières livraisons de la sixième M5 ne débuteront qu’au printemps prochain mais pour être parmi les premiers servis, il faudra signer sa commande dès leur ouverture début septembre, au tarif de 126 500 euros.
