Les scooters électriques capables de sortir d’un cadre purement urbain se comptent encore sur les doigts d’une main et, pourtant, ils ont plus que jamais toute leur légitimité. BMW avait ouvert la voie avec son
C Evolution lancé dès 2014, remportant sur le marché français un franc succès: 60 % à 80 % de la production de ce maxi-scooter allemand trouvaient preneur dans l’Hexagone. Il est remplacé aujourd’hui par le CE 04, dont les précommandes atteignent déjà plus de 1000 unités en France, surtout auprès de clients fidèles de la marque en région Île-de-France et Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

(400 cm3) est proposée en deux versions vendues au même tarif: A1 (permis B + formation de 7 heures, limitée à 23 kW de puissance), ou permis moto A2/A. C’est cette «grosse» version que nous avons pu essayer, affichant 31 kW (42 ch) de puissance en crête et 62 Nm de couple, pour un poids contenu à 231 kg, soit 34 kg de moins que le lourd C Evolution.
Décollage immédiat
Au premier regard, on devine facilement que le centre de gravité est abaissé sur ce scooter qui tourne le dos à la banalité. Sa forme longue et basse est dictée par son architecture, avec un lit de 40 cellules de batterie Samsung (55 kg) sous le plancher. Son long empattement digne d’une moto permet de loger sous la fine selle flottante un compartiment de rangement qui accepte un casque intégral et un câble de recharge bien enroulé. Placés entre ce coffre et la roue arrière, le moteur et ses accessoires sont équipés d’un refroidissement liquide.

La transmission se fait au moyen d’une courroie crantée bien visible. «Un scooter, c’est avant tout de la protection et du rangement: pas très sexy. Avec un modèle électrique, nous partions d’une feuille blanche!», explique Edgar Heinrich, le designer en chef de BMW Motorrad. En effet, les stylistes se sont lâchés. Avec ses lignes futuristes, aussi dépouillées que soignées et apportant une vraie fraîcheur sur le marché, ce scooter aurait sa place dans un film d’anticipation.
Au guidon, on se sent tout de suite en confiance grâce à la hauteur mesurée et à l’équilibre à basse vitesse de l’engin. La longue selle et l’espace offert au plancher laissent le choix de la position de conduite: pieds en avant façon cruiser ou jambes pliées dans une attitude plus agressive, typée moto. Cela tombe bien, le CE 04 est à l’aise dans tous ces cas de figure, aussi doux en conduite urbaine tranquille que performant dès qu’on titille la poignée des «gaz». Et les accélérations sont stupéfiantes, sous la veille d’un antipatinage efficace, tandis que le freinage bénéficie bien sûr du renfort de l’ABS.

En ville, vu la forte décélération offerte par le freinage régénératif quel que soit le mode (Eco, Rain, Road ou, en option, Dynamic), on privilégie vite une conduite «à une poignée» en anticipant un peu. Il est très plaisant d’accompagner ainsi la machine jusqu’à l’arrêt complet au feu, en douceur… avant de repartir comme une balle au feu vert dans un sifflement caractéristique. Dans les larges avenues de Barcelone, notre terrain d’essai, ce long scooter (2,28 m) se joue de toutes les situations et sa largeur contenue permet de remonter les files sans souci. Son gabarit pourrait néanmoins devenir plus problématique dans la circulation dense des rues parisiennes. La marche arrière aidera pour les manœuvres.
Le comportement rassure à l’attaque dans les virages des petites routes surplombant la ville catalane, avec une partie cycle rigide et rigoureuse et un freinage puissant. En option, des éléments de sécurité active avancés peuvent être adoptés, comme l’ABS Pro ou le Dynamic Traction Control, qui prennent en compte l’inclinaison de la machine.

Serein sur voie rapide (120 km/h maxi), le BMW manque de protection aérodynamique à partir de 100 km/h. Le mono-amortisseur est efficace mais ferme, tout comme la selle fine. Ce parti pris accordant la priorité au comportement et au look conditionne un confort très acceptable mais loin des références du genre. Quant au passager, sans poignée de maintien ou dosseret, il n’est pas à une place très enviable.
Avec 130 km (100 km en version permis A1), l’autonomie annoncée est en baisse par rapport au modèle Long Range du C Evolution. Nous avons relevé une consommation moyenne de 7,2 kWh/100 km sans tomber dans l’écoconduite, ce qui correspond à un rayon d’action réel de plus de 100 kilomètres avec sa batterie de 8,5 kWh utiles. La recharge complète requiert 4h20 min maximum avec le chargeur standard de 2,3 kW, ou 1 h 40 min avec le chargeur de 6,9 kW (1 240 €). Avec ce dernier, 45 min suffisent pour passer de 20 % à 80 %.
