C’est la reine du «Ring». Il y a tout juste un an, la dernière génération de Civic Type R établissait un nouveau record pour une «traction» sur le mythique tracé du Nürburgring, parcourant ses 20,8 kilomètres en 7 minutes 43 secondes et 8 dixièmes. Depuis plus d’un quart de siècle, les versions Type R, comme Racing, dynamisent la gamme Honda.
Inauguré par la NSX en 1992, ce label sportif a littéralement endiablé plusieurs générations d’Integra, d’Accord et de Civic. Motoriste hors pair, le constructeur japonais a développé d’incroyables moteurs VTEC capables de prendre jusqu’à 9 000 tr/min, comme une mécanique de course.
Ces mécaniques rageuses furent longtemps sa marque de fabrique, avant que la nécessaire réduction des émissions de CO² ne le contraigne à céder aux sirènes de la suralimentation.
Les talentueux motoristes de Honda sont néanmoins parvenus à faire cohabiter harmonieusement turbo et distribution totalement variable, le VTEC étant cette fois mis à contribution pour réduire le temps de réponse.
La deuxième mouture du 4-cylindres 2 litres de la dernière Civic Type R affiche ainsi 320 ch, soit la remarquable puissance spécifique de 160 ch/l. Traduit en termes de performances, cela donne un 0 à 100 km/h abattu en 5,8 secondes et une vitesse de pointe de 272 km/h, des valeurs comparables à celles du premier coupé NSX, excusez du peu!
Toute la difficulté, pour une traction, résidait dans la transmission de 400 Nm de couple sur le bitume. Les ingénieurs nippons ont employé les grands moyens, notamment un train avant à pivot découplé et un différentiel à glissement limité.
Mais, l’efficacité sportive qui a permis à la Civic de distancer ses rivales sur le tracé du massif de l’Eiffel tient aussi dans une caisse plus rigide, un centre de gravité abaissé, un empattement accru, des pneus plus larges et un train arrière multibras. Sans oublier de spectaculaires appendices aérodynamiques qui ne sont pas là pour faire de la figuration.
Changement notable comparé à la génération précédente, le conducteur promu pilote est calé dans un superbe siège baquet installé 25 mm plus bas. La planche de bord épurée dotée d’une instrumentation numérique privilégiant le compte-tours et le petit levier de vitesses avec un pommeau en aluminium ajoutent à l’ambiance sportive.
On jurerait être au volant d’un coupé. Le moteur a gagné en caractère, l’excellente boîte manuelle délivrant un «talon-pointe» automatique permet d’en tirer la quintessence, et les trois sorties d’échappement sont parfaitement dans le ton.
Cette enthousiasmante mécanique est en outre facile à exploiter. Le comportement routier de la Civic Type R s’avère à la fois incisif et stable. Sur circuit, la limite vient des pneumatiques, mais elle pourrait facilement être repoussée en recourant à des semi-slicks.
La bonne surprise, c’est que cette redoutable efficacité sportive n’a pas été obtenue au détriment du confort. Grâce à un amortissement piloté ZF Sachs au registre étendu, la Type R est très facile à vivre au quotidien. Seules restrictions à sa polyvalence, une homologation en quatre places et un petit réservoir de 46 litres qui n’offre guère plus de 400 kilomètres d’autonomie.
Toujours est-il que le potentiel sportif de cette «GTI» du troisième millénaire est tout bonnement sensationnel. Cette traction affiche en réalité un niveau de performance équivalent à celui d’une bonne GT des années quatre-vingt-dix. Et les limites du genre ne sont sans doute pas encore atteintes. Renault s’apprêterait à relever le défi du Nürburgring avec une version Trophy de la nouvelle Mégane RS. Tant qu’il y aura des amateurs…
