De Royal Enfield, on connaît déjà la Bullet. Cette moto au look des années 1930 se pilote, sous nos latitudes, caparaçonné d’un grand manteau de cuir avec une besace à l’épaule, façon James Coburn dans «Il était une fois la révolution». Posséder cette machine qui gronde et qui vibre procure toujours l’indicible sentiment de détenir un morceau de l’ancien Empire britannique.
Accessible aux jeunes permis
Changement de registre avec l’Interceptor, dévoilée à la fin de l’année 2018. Cette fois, il ne s’agissait plus de faire du neuf avec du vieux. La marque, née anglaise en 1901, produit enfin une machine moderne. En 2015, Royal Enfield a effectué une sorte de retour aux sources en acquérant Harris Performance, un concepteur et préparateur de motos britannique, doté d’un solide bureau d’études. Cet effort de recherche a porté ses fruits. Même si l’Interceptor n’embarque pas une technologie dernier cri, la moto est de conception actuelle. Son moteur de 650 cm3 développe 47 ch. La modestie de cette cavalerie, au regard de celle des engins japonais de même cylindrée, la rend en revanche accessible aux jeunes permis.
Superbes carters en métal poli
La hauteur de selle raisonnable (804 mm) et la masse contenue (202 kg) intéresseront les motards et les motardes de taille moyenne. Son moteur se caractérise par une exceptionnelle souplesse. Son bon rendement procure d’honnêtes accélérations. Sa sonorité est discrète, mais onctueuse. Les amortisseurs, dotés de petites bonbonnes, préservent agréablement les lombaires. Des commandes douces et précises rendent immédiate la prise en main de la machine. Les pots d’échappement relevés et chromés lui confèrent un sympathique look rétro, accentué par les superbes carters en métal poli de son propulseur.
L’Interceptor ravira aussi le motard aguerri. Car sa simplicité lui rappellera ses premières motos. Celles dont le tableau de bord ne ressemblait pas encore à celui des avions de ligne. Paradoxe ou ironie de l’histoire, l’indienne a pour première concurrente une anglaise, la Triumph Street Twin. Son moteur est plus gros (900 cm3), sa puissance, dans sa dernière version, près de 20 chevaux supérieure à celle de l’Interceptor, et sa finition un bon cran au-dessus. Mais à 9 400 €, elle est presque moitié plus coûteuse.
